Andrew Collins

2007 Business Administration–Management graduate Andrew Collins is Information Technology Manager for Cassano’s Pizza in Dayton, Ohio.  Cassano’s – “the King of Pizza” – is a western Ohio institution, with 33 restaurants throughout the southwest corner of the state.

Andrew works in the “nerve center” of the restaurant, which includes a call center through which delivery orders for all 33 stores are routed. The 56 terminals in the call center are all linked through “the most up-to-date system out there,” says Andrew – a system which he helped build and is responsible for maintaining. Pickup and delivery orders are displayed on a bank of monitors at the rear of the call center, while other monitors show constantly updated delivery quote times for each store.

In addition to the call center, each store has one or more cash drawers, an office computer, driver’s workstation, and several printers and monitors which Andrew and his team have to keep humming.  The pizza crust is definitely hand-tossed, but behind the operation is an extensive network of technology!

Education has been a key ingredient in Andrew’s rise through the ranks to his current position with Cassano’s, where he has been employed for nearly 6 years.  Andrew turned to National College for the practical management knowledge he needed to supplement his information technology skills.  Our experienced instructors and hands-on approach were what impressed him most; but his fellow students were also a source of knowledge.  “It was also nice when you get into a class with a lot of people who were in the kind of business [you were in] or even had their own business,” he says, “so you actually heard a lot of first-hand information about how things work.”

Entering his final term, Andrew assumed supervisory responsibilities as his department expanded.  The impact of his classes, and especially his externship course, made an immediate impact: “There are a lot of things…I could bring here right away…my last quarter I could tie things in to the externship and bring them right here.”

[Editor’s note: as a former pizza deliveryman myself, I had to put Andrew and Cassano’s to the test.  The day after we interviewed Andrew, your National News editorial staff phoned in an order.  Our call was promptly answered, our order was routed to the nearest store, and we were quoted an accurate delivery time.  Oh, and the pizza was awesome!  We wish we had more assignments like this one.]
